STRENGTHENING YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS: MASABA WARD YOUTH TRAINED ON POLITICAL INCLUSION

In June, SIGs Place, with support from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS Kenya), hosted a youth training and capacity-building forum in Masaba Ward. The forum brought together 28 young people aged 18 to 25 from different sub-locations in the ward for an engaging discussion on strengthening youth participation in politics. The event aimed to build knowledge, boost confidence, and inspire the youth to play more active and informed roles in political spaces.

The training focused on helping the participants understand Kenya’s political system, political party structures, ideologies, nomination and registration processes, and the legal framework supporting youth inclusion in politics. Through interactive sessions, group discussions, and practical case studies, the youth explored how political parties function, how they can engage meaningfully within them, and why their voice matters in shaping the future of the county and the country.

The forum also addressed the challenges that hinder young people from participating fully in politics. These included, lack of civic education, delays in accessing national identification cards, limited funding, and minimal representation within party structures. Many of the participants shared their frustrations and hopes, expressing a strong desire to be part of decision-making processes and political leadership.

Several key messages emerged from the discussions including;

  • The youth need more support in acquiring national ID cards.
  • There is a need to strengthen their understanding of rights under the Constitution.
  • Political parties should be more active at the grassroots, inclusive, and meaningfully engage the youth.
  • Leaders must create space for youth to speak, learn, and lead.
  • Peaceful political engagement and mentorship should be promoted.

The training offered a unique opportunity for young people to gain clarity on how political systems work and how they can influence change. It also created a safe and supportive space where they could connect, learn from each other, and build a sense of purpose in their civic roles. The energy, enthusiasm, and commitment shown during the session confirmed that young people in Migori are ready and willing to take their place in politics, if given the chance and support.
